New Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs wasted no time in making an impact after signing a restructured contract with the team. Diggs had the final three years of his four-year contract with the Buffalo Bills eliminated by the Texans after they acquired him in a trade. As part of his new deal, Diggs paid a hefty sum of $100,000 from his $22.5 million salary to teammate Jimmie Ward in exchange for Ward’s No. 1 jersey for the upcoming 2024-25 season. This move allowed Diggs to return to wearing his college number, which he wore at Maryland, after wearing No. 14 in the NFL with both the Vikings and Bills.

The trade to the Texans came as a surprise to many, as Diggs had hinted at potentially wanting out all offseason. He expressed excitement about the move and has already shared images from the team’s facility on social media. Diggs is no stranger to success on the field, having achieved multiple Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors during his career. He has consistently surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in receiving yards over the past six seasons and has had at least 100 catches in five of those seasons. In 2020, he led the NFL in receptions and receiving yards.

Despite a solid 2023 season where Diggs caught 107 passes for 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns, he struggled in the second half of the season. He now looks forward to a fresh start with the Texans, joining a young and talented offense led by quarterback C.J. Stroud, wide receiver Tank Dell, and tight end Dalton Schultz. The addition of Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon further strengthens the Texans’ offense, providing them with the potential to be one of the best in the league next season. After making it to the Divisional Round last year, Houston is looking to make an even deeper run in the playoffs in the upcoming season.

Diggs’ decision to pay for Ward’s No. 1 jersey reflects his desire for a new beginning with his college number and highlights his commitment to making the most of his opportunity with the Texans. As he settles into his new team and prepares for the upcoming season, Diggs remains focused on helping Houston build on their recent success and establish themselves as a contender in the league. With his proven track record of excellence on the field, Diggs brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Texans, adding a dynamic element to an already promising offense.
