The 2024 Paris Olympics have started, with Team USA’s women’s gymnastics team looking to get back on top after winning silver in Tokyo. Simone Biles sustained an apparent lower left leg injury during warm-ups, but continued to compete with a heavily taped ankle. Despite some stumbles, Biles held a significant lead in the all-around standings. Sunisa Lee narrowly beat out Jordan Chiles for the second American spot in the individual all-around finals, while Jade Carey fell on the floor exercise and won’t defend her gold in that discipline.

Team USA dominated the team standings after two subdivisions, holding a big lead over China. Simone Biles led the individual all-around standings, followed by Sunisa Lee and Jordan Chiles. There are three more subdivisions to go before the final field is set. Suni Lee beat out Jordan Chiles for a spot in the all-around final, while Biles finished the qualification round strong despite her injury.

Biles performed well on the vault, scoring significantly higher than her competitors. She landed her Yurchenko double pike with a taped ankle, receiving praise from commentators for her grit and determination. Jordan Chiles made a strong bid for the all-around competition on the uneven bars, while Suni Lee competed for her own all-around spot. The fight for the second U.S. all-around spot came down to Lee and Chiles, with Lee holding the advantage on the bars.

Despite sustaining an injury during warm-ups, Biles competed on the floor and received a 14.600 score. Jade Carey stumbled badly on the floor exercise, affecting her chances of reaching the finals. Biles’ injury was a potential concern, but she continued to compete and perform well. The team doctor taped her left ankle, allowing her to continue competing. Suni Lee and Jordan Chiles also had solid performances on the vault, contributing to Team USA’s strong showing in the qualification round.
