Taiwan has been on high alert as Chinese military exercises take place near the island, with jets scrambled and missile, naval, and land units put on alert. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry condemned China’s actions, stating that it jeopardized regional peace and stability. President Lai Ching-te called for Beijing to stop military intimidation and affirmed Taiwan’s commitment to freedom and democracy while seeking dialogue with China.

The Nationalist Party, known for its pro-China stance, also condemned Beijing’s actions, calling for restraint and peaceful resolution. Tensions escalated outside Taiwan’s legislature as protests erupted over legislative changes proposed by the Nationalists. The People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command stated that the exercises were intended to test PLA units’ capabilities and serve as a warning to separatist forces seeking independence. China’s coast guard also conducted drills near Taiwan-controlled islands, Kinmen and Matsu.

The PLA released a map of the exercise areas, surrounding Taiwan and its outlying islands at different points. China’s actions were seen as a response to Taiwan’s election results, with the Democratic Progressive Party continuing to govern the island for over a decade. U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Stephen Sklenka called on Asia-Pacific nations to condemn the Chinese military exercises, emphasizing the need for a unified response. Japan’s Foreign Minister highlighted the importance of Taiwan as a partner, expressing shared values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.

As tensions continue to rise in the Taiwan Strait, international concern grows over the potential for conflict between China and Taiwan. Taiwan’s commitment to maintaining its independence while seeking dialogue with Beijing reflects its desire to maintain stability in the region. The support from the U.S., Japan, and other regional partners underscores the importance of upholding peace and security in the Asia-Pacific.
