Army reservist Shayne Patrick Burke survived a grizzly bear attack in Grand Teton National Park by playing dead and holding onto his can of bear spray. He described the attack as the most violent experience he has ever had, even after surviving being shot at, mortared, and IED explosions. Burke was walking through the woods in an attempt to photograph a Great Grey Owl when he encountered a bear cub and then saw the mother bear charging at him. Despite attempting to deploy the bear spray, the bear closed the gap quickly, and Burke decided to lie on the ground and protect his vitals by interlocking his hands behind his neck.

The grizzly bear bit Burke on the shoulder, legs, and buttocks, slammed him to the ground, stood on his back, and then went for a kill bite on his neck. However, Burke held onto the bear spray can, which exploded in the bear’s mouth, causing it to run away. He then ran in the opposite direction up a hill and texted his wife that he had been attacked while applying improvised tourniquets to his legs. As they waited for help, Burke filmed a video saying goodbye to his loved ones in case the worst happened. Thanks to reading about bear attacks and being prepared with bear spray, Burke was able to survive the ordeal and was rescued by Jenny Lake Rangers.

Burke expressed no ill will towards the bear, acknowledging that it was simply defending its cub and describing the incident as a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He urged park officials not to capture or kill the bear, emphasizing his love and respect for wildlife. Despite the traumatic experience, Burke is expected to make a full recovery and expressed gratitude towards the Jenny Lake Rangers who saved his life. He credits the bear spray and knowing what to do in a bear attack as the main reasons he was able to survive the encounter.

The closure of a mountain in Grand Teton National Park was prompted by the surprise grizzly attack on Burke. His quick thinking and ability to remain calm during the attack were crucial in his survival. Burke’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared when venturing into bear country by carrying bear spray and knowing how to react in the event of an encounter. The attack also highlights the risks and challenges of interacting with wildlife in their natural habitats. Despite the terrifying experience, Burke’s positive outlook towards wildlife and his recovery process is a testament to his resilience and determination to overcome adversity.
