Rev. Billy Graham was honored with the unveiling of a statue in his honor at the U.S. Capitol, where he was remembered as one of America’s greatest citizens and enduring heroes. The ceremony featured speeches from House Speaker Mike Johnson, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and Rev. Franklin Graham, Graham’s son and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Only four individuals in the history of the United States have been recognized with a Congressional Gold Medal, lying in state after their death, and a statue at the U.S. Capitol, with Graham being the latest addition to this distinguished group.
Governor Cooper highlighted that Graham’s statue represents one of North Carolina’s dearest treasures, a man of faith who brought together people of different backgrounds and beliefs. Graham’s statue replaced that of Charles Aycock, a former North Carolina Governor, in line with legislation passed in 2015 that called for the replacement of Aycock’s statue with one honoring Graham. Plans for Graham’s statue began shortly after his death in February 2018, and his dedication to delivering a message of redemption and counseling political leaders of all parties was noted during the ceremony.
Franklin Graham emphasized his father’s humility and desire for the focus to be on the Lord Jesus Christ rather than on his own statue. The inscription on the statue’s base features verses from the Bible, including John 3:16, which reflects the Gospel message of God’s love and redemption. Franklin Graham stressed that his father believed in the Bible wholeheartedly and dedicated his life to preaching the message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. The Graham family expressed their honor that the statue will point future generations to their heavenly father and His Son, Jesus Christ, as revealed through the Scriptures.
