Demerio Houston, a cornerback for the Calgary Stampeders, is currently tied for second in the CFL with four interceptions, just two behind the leader. Last season, he led the league in interceptions and defensive takeaways while playing for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Houston, who hails from Shelby, N.C., signed a two-year deal with Calgary in free agency and has already amassed 39 tackles in seven games this season. He is on track to surpass his career highs in both interceptions and tackles from the previous year when he was named a CFL all-star. Houston credits his improvement to working on his tackling and hands, as well as increased physicality on the field.

In Calgary’s recent game against Ottawa, Houston had a team-high seven tackles but lamented the plays that got away, including an 18-yard catch by Jaelon Acklin that went off Houston’s hands. The catch extended Ottawa’s final drive, resulting in a game-winning field goal by Lewis Ward. Despite making plays throughout the game, Houston feels he should have done more to secure the win for his team. Calgary, currently 4-6, is on a bye week but remains in contention in the West Division. Houston is looking ahead to the upcoming Labour Day home-and-home series against Edmonton, which will kick off an important stretch for the Stampeders as they aim for their 19th consecutive playoff appearance.

Having experienced success in the West Division with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, including multiple Grey Cup appearances, Houston understands the importance of the upcoming games for Calgary. Despite being a quiet and humble individual, Houston is known for his ball-hawking abilities and shutdown corner skills. His agent, Kenny Kim, describes him as a consummate professional and one of the top defensive players in the league. Houston’s background in playing offense as well as special teams has contributed to his aggressive and determined style of play on defense. He combines physical abilities with intensive film study and communication with teammates to stay at the top of his game.

During the CFL season, Houston dedicates significant time to studying film on opponents and analyzing their tendencies on the field. He also maintains open communication with his teammate, halfback Kobie Williams, to ensure they are always on the same page during games. Houston attributes his success to his love for the game, emphasizing the importance of passion and dedication in achieving success on the field. With Calgary approaching an important phase in the season, Houston is focused on continuing to improve and help his team succeed. As the Stampeders gear up for the final stretch of games, Houston is determined to do whatever it takes to put himself in the best position to contribute and make a difference for his team.
