Many smaller cities along the path of totality for the upcoming 2024 eclipse have already reached 100% occupancy for short-term rentals. Larger cities are not far behind, with over 80% occupancy in most cases. The data compiled by AirDNA from Vrbo and Airbnb listings shows that April 6 and April 8 will also have high occupancy levels, with a decrease in available listings leading up to the eclipse. Interestingly, a quarter of Airbnb guests in the U.S. booked for the eve of the eclipse are choosing to stay along the path of totality, leading to almost 90% occupancy for Airbnb properties in the region.

New hosts are joining the rental market in anticipation of the eclipse, with over 1,000 new hosts on Airbnb for the weekend of the eclipse. Around 10% of travelers staying along the path of totality have not booked through the site before. Hosts, both new and old, are advised to prepare for the influx of guests with the help of platforms like Rent Responsibly, which focuses on educating hosts on best practices for managing short-term rentals during busy periods. Planning for guest questions and needs, as well as engaging with local tourism resources, can help hosts provide a positive experience for their guests.

The 2024 eclipse is expected to draw a significant number of travelers to the areas along the path of totality. Airbnb bookings are already high, with some cities showing over 80% occupancy for short-term rental listings. Beyond Pricing, a revenue management software provider, has observed that travelers are looking for unique features in their rental properties, such as hot tubs or larger listings with five or more bedrooms. Families in particular are seeking accommodations to experience the eclipse together in locations like Rochester, New York.

Despite the high demand for accommodations along the path of totality, there may still be room for last-minute bookings for the eclipse. Cities like Syracuse, Toledo, Cleveland, Bloomington, and Rochester still have available Airbnb accommodations as of April 4. Guests who are flexible in their choice of city along the eclipse path may be able to secure a place to stay even with the high occupancy levels reported in many areas. The eclipse presents a unique opportunity for travelers to witness this natural phenomenon in North America, and hosts are preparing to provide a memorable experience for their guests.
