Amy Tibbals, a senior lecturer in the Department of English at The Ohio State University at Marion, has been honored with The Ohio State University’s 2024 Provost’s Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Lecturer. Tibbals, who is dedicated to student-centered education and incorporating service-learning into student experiences, was surprised with the news of her award during a virtual meeting in March. Through her innovative teaching methods, Tibbals engages students in experiential learning opportunities, such as the “Pay It Forward” program, where students develop grant requests for local nonprofit organizations to refine their writing skills while making a positive impact in the community.

Tibbals’ commitment to integrating real-world application and community engagement into her courses has garnered praise from her students, who appreciate the opportunity to use their writing skills to help others. Her classes are lauded for teaching important life lessons and preparing students for the professional world. In addition to her role as a lecturer, Tibbals serves as the assistant coordinator of the campus Writing Center, providing support and mentorship to students to help them achieve their academic and professional goals. Her dedication to enhancing student learning extends beyond the classroom, as she actively participates in campus initiatives and professional development opportunities.

As a recipient of the Provost’s Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Lecturer, Tibbals will receive a $5,000 honorarium and induction into Ohio State’s Academy of Teaching. This recognition highlights her exemplary contributions to undergraduate and graduate/professional student education and her commitment to excellence in teaching. Tibbals and other award winners will be honored during the annual Faculty Awards Celebration on April 30.
