Long Island police have returned to the home of suspected serial killer Rex Heuermann in Massapequa Park, N.Y. The victims include Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. These women were among 11 bodies discovered after a 911 call from Shannan Gilbert in 2010. Two other victims, Jessica Taylor and Valerie Mack, were dismembered and dumped in separate locations. Additional remains of these victims were found during the search for Gilbert in 2011. Heuermann faces three counts of first-degree murder and four counts of second-degree murder and has pleaded not guilty.
Born and raised in Massapequa Park, New York, Heuermann bought his childhood home from his mother in the 1990s and moved his family there. He was described by neighbors as a quiet businessman who worked as an architect and commuted to Manhattan. Despite being charged with the Gilgo Four murders, Heuermann has not been named a suspect in the other deaths related to the case. His lawyer has defended him, stating that he is not capable of committing the murders, and has mentioned Heuermann’s “sadistic” internet searches in relation to the case.
