The Detroit Lions are ready to run it back.

After a near-flawless 15-2 campaign, the NFC’s No. 1-ranked team will begin their second consecutive march toward postseason glory when they take on the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round of the playoffs at Detroit’s Ford Field on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Just two years ago, a Lions-Commanders Divisional Round matchup would have seemed highly unlikely. Prior to last year’s heroic run, Dan Campbell’s Lions had last advanced to the postseason in 2016. As for Dan Quinn’s Commanders, they haven’t won a playoff game since 2005.

Now, Jared Goff and co. come into this winner-take-all matchup following a bye week. Better yet, thanks to the break, there’s a possibility the team will regain star running back David Montgomery who has been out since he suffered a week 15 MCL injury.

On the other side of the field, the Commanders enter week 20 holding their heads high. Their decisive 23-20 victory over the favored Buccaneers surprised the NFL. Daniels led the effort completing 24-of-35 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns leading to their last-second, game-clinching field goal.

“NOT DONE YET,” the team shared on Instagram.

If you want to roar with the Lions — or are a visiting Commanders fan dreaming of another road upset — last-minute tickets are still available.

At the time of publication, the lowest get-in price we could find was $470 before fees on Vivid Seats.

About the Lions vs. Commanders matchup

Dating back to 1932 — when the Lions and Commanders were respectively known as the Portsmouth Spartans and Boston Braves —  the Commanders hold a 31-16 advantage over the Lions.

Most recently, the clubs squared off in September 2022; in that showdown, Detroit handed Washington a 36-27 loss. Jared Goff threw four touchdown passes and Amon-Ra St. Brown led the way catching two of those end zone tosses.

This past season, the Lions closed the year on a high note defeating their NFC North rival Vikings to clinch their second consecutive division title. Stars Goff, Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, Penei Sewell, Frank Ragnow, Brian Branch and Jack Fox will represent the team at the 2025 Pro Bowl.

Meanwhile, the Commanders wrapped 2024 with an impressive 12-5 record, largely thanks to five wins in a row to close the year. Their Wild Card weekend win over the Bucs was particularly sweet for Quinn and co. too; the last time, the squad was in the postseason they lost to Tampa Bay in January 2021. As for their Pro Bowlers, Daniels are veteran wideout Terry McLaurin the Commanders set to suit up in Orlando this year.
