New York had a culinary all-star lineup this year.

On Monday, Michelin Guide unveiled its 2024 selections for Washington D.C., Chicago and New York City. The Big Apple was served up a smorgasbord of stars, including their first new three-starred restaurant in 12 years.

That honor went to Jungsik, Jungsik Yim’s namesake Korean restaurant that opened in 2011, which was upgraded from two stars before, per a recent release.

According to Michelin, this promotion makes them the first Korean restaurant in the US to be awarded a third star — the Guide’s highest rating for a single restaurant — as well as Gotham’s first new three-star entry since Eleven Madison Park was bestowed the honor in 2012.

“We are thrilled to welcome a new three-star restaurant, Jungsik New York to the esteemed Michelin Star family,” declared Gwendal Poullennec International Director of the Michelin Guides. “The originality and impeccable presentation at Jungsik New York created a distinct experience for our Inspectors collectively.”

Helmed by executive chef Daeik Kim, Jungsik is often viewed as a pioneer of NYC’s contemporary Korean scene, serving modern takes on traditional banchan.

These include “slivers of raw striped jack with white kimchi and chilled fish bone broth” and “gorgeously crisped octopus with gochujang aioli,” per the guide.

Michelin dubbed the cooking “impeccably executed, and enormously satisfying; a meal that makes you involuntarily nod to yourself while you’re eating.”

With this award, Jungsik joined four restaurants that held onto their three-Michelin-star status: Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin, Masa, and Per Se.

Meanwhile, three Big Apple restaurants were inducted into two-stardom: Tasting menu hotspot César from César Ramirez, Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare (also by Ramirez), and new Japanese restaurant Sushi Sho. This brings the grand total to 14.

Among the one-starred Michelin restaurants, eight received the star for the first time. These were Bar Miller, the newly-reopened Cafe Boulud on the Upper East Side, and Noksu, the literally underground hotspot serving remixes of Korean classics.

Also worth mentioning was Tribeca’s One White Street, which received a new Michelin Green Star award for its sustainable practices. Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Family Meal at Blue Hill, and Dirt Candy retained their Green Stars.

Meanwhile, 16 new New York City restaurants were newly-designated as Bib Gourmands, defined by the Michelin Guide as tasty but “wallet-friendly” restaurants.

These included Bayon, Bonnie’s, Bungalow, Cecily, Cervo’s, CheLi, and Coqodaq, which — somewhat ironically — also went viral in March for serving up a $28 chicken nugget.

While the Big Apple’s 91 Bib Gourmands are a step down from the 102 last year, the city still boasts the most BGs of any city, Forbes reported.
