Google has once again delighted fans with the release of the Pixel 8a at the Google I/O event in 2024. The Pixel 8a is a mid-range version of the Pixel 8 family, offering many features at a more affordable price point. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro were heavily promoted as “AI-first smartphones,” and the Pixel 8a continues this trend with a suite of applications that use AI for various functions such as photo editing tools and Circle To Search.

Despite having lower specifications than the Pixel 8 Pro, the Pixel 8a boasts similar core specs to the vanilla Pixel 8, including the Tensor G3 chipset, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB or 256GB of storage. The 8GB of RAM may pose potential issues in the future for memory-intensive AI tasks, which could result in more AI features being pushed to the cloud in the Pixel 8a compared to higher-end models.

The Pixel 8a features a slightly smaller 6.1-inch screen with vibrant colors, great viewing angles, and Actua branding similar to the Pixel 8. However, the bezels may be more noticeable coming from a flagship device, but they fade into the background with use. The camera technology in the Pixel 8a is comparable to that of the previous year’s Pixel 7a, offering more megapixels but with a smaller and less sensitive sensor than the Pixel 8.

Battery life is a strong suit for the Pixel 8a, offering slightly better endurance than its predecessor. However, charging speeds are relatively slow at 18W wired and 7.5W wireless, making it essential to plan for longer days of use. Like other devices in the Pixel 8 family, the Pixel 8a will receive seven years of software support and security updates, making it a reliable investment for the long term.

Design-wise, the Pixel 8a maintains Google’s signature camera bar design but lacks flashiness or trendiness. The matte finish on the rear provides a comfortable grip, and with minor downgrades in materials compared to the Pixel 8, the Pixel 8a remains a practical workhorse phone. Priced at $499, the Pixel 8a offers a compelling value proposition, especially if Google offers discounts that could bring the price down to $400, making it an even more enticing choice for consumers. Overall, the Pixel 8a is a strong contender in the mid-range smartphone market in 2024, offering a similar feature set to higher-end models at a more affordable price point.
