A protest in Brooklyn against Israel’s military offensive in Gaza turned chaotic as police arrested dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators. Videos on social media showed officers punching people on the ground and using violent tactics. At least 34 people were arrested, with charges unclear. The activist group Within Our Lifetime organized the protest, which started calmly but quickly escalated as police arrived in large numbers and warned protesters to move to the sidewalk or face arrest. The event was charged from the start due to the ongoing war in Gaza and recent protests in New York.

The protest alternated between marches and standoffs with the police, with multiple videos capturing officers using force against protesters. In one video, a police commander delivered punches to a person lying on the ground, while in another, an officer repeatedly punched a man on the ground with a commander aiming a kick. The aggressive behavior of the police, including commanders, was reminiscent of past incidents during Black Lives Matter demonstrations in 2020. The footage showed police pummeling protesters, which led to a $13 million settlement in a class-action suit.

In a video posted on Twitch, a group of people were seen filming police officers and commanders walking on Bay Ridge Avenue. A police commander grabbed one of the filmmakers, who was then pushed to the ground, handcuffed, and arrested. Despite the arrests, other protesters continued to record the events as they unfolded. The arrested individuals were taken to police vans and driven to headquarters in Manhattan. The protest eventually dispersed as a light rain began to fall by 8 p.m. The chaotic scene highlighted the tense atmosphere surrounding the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the deep divisions within the community regarding the issue.

The protest was organized by Within Our Lifetime, an activist group led by Palestinians, to commemorate the Nakba, or “catastrophe,” when Palestinians were forced from their homes during the 1948 war that led to Israel’s founding. The organization has been holding an annual rally in mid-May in Bay Ridge, a neighborhood with a significant Arab population. Given the heightened tensions surrounding the war in Gaza and ongoing protests in New York, this year’s event was charged from the start and quickly escalated into a confrontation between protesters and police. Eyewitnesses described seeing police indiscriminately grabbing people off the street and sidewalk, leading to multiple arrests and violent encounters.

The videos of police using force against protesters brought back memories of similar incidents during the Black Lives Matter demonstrations in 2020 and raised concerns about police conduct during protests. The aggressive tactics employed by officers, including commanders, were captured on video and shared widely on social media, sparking outrage and condemnation from activists and community members. The protest highlighted the deep-seated divisions and passionate emotions surrounding the conflict in Gaza, with supporters of both Palestine and Israel expressing their views in the streets of Brooklyn. Despite the arrests and confrontations, the protest ultimately disbanded, leaving questions about the use of force by law enforcement and the ongoing tensions in the community.
