The rate of assaults on U.S. law enforcement officers hit a 10-year high in the previous year, with 79,000 attacks on officers recorded, as per FBI data. While 60 officers were killed, one less than the previous year, there was an overall increase in officer deaths between 2021 and 2023 compared to any other three-year period. Data also shows that more state, federal, and local officers being injured by guns. Guns were the most commonly used weapons in officers’ deaths, with 52% of all killed officers dying from gunshot wounds. The southern U.S. had the highest number of officer deaths, although this region is also the largest.

The FBI is working to understand the reasons behind the increase in assaults despite a decrease in officer killings from the previous year. The data reveals that 466 officers were assaulted with guns in 2023, marking the highest level in a decade. This contrasts with less than 200 officers assaulted with guns in 2014. The release of this data coincides with National Police Week, where law enforcement leaders gathered to honor fallen officers. Unfortunately, a recent incident resulted in four members of a U.S. Marshal’s Service task force being killed while trying to serve a warrant, highlighting the dangers faced by officers on duty.

The National Fraternal Order of Police noted a significant rise in police shootings, with 378 officers shot in the past year alone, marking a record high since data tracking began in 2018. The organization reported a 60% increase in police shootings and is concerned with the ongoing trend. Former FBI Special Agent Nicole Parker attributes the rise in assaults and deaths to the demonization and disrespect of law enforcement that has occurred in recent years. Parker believes that the current societal dynamics have emboldened individuals to commit acts of violence against officers.

Another factor contributing to the increase in assaults and deaths is the growing legal and social scrutiny that inhibits officers from defending themselves, even in justified situations. This has led to a situation where officers are hesitant to act in dangerous situations, potentially putting their lives at risk. Additionally, critics blame politicians, media, and activists for perpetuating negative narratives around law enforcement, leading to a lack of respect for police officers. There is a call for legislative action, with the suggestion of passing bills like the ‘Protect and Serve’ act to make it a federal crime to knowingly assault a police officer, holding criminals accountable for their actions.

Furthermore, the focus on providing additional training, particularly in ambush scenarios, is considered essential to better prepare officers for dangerous situations. With a significant number of ambush attacks leading to officers being shot, there is a need for more effective training programs. The overall sentiment is that officers need to be treated with more respect and support to ensure their safety and well-being. By addressing the root causes of the rise in violence against law enforcement, there is hope for a safer working environment for officers across the country.
