A gunman who allegedly killed a sports YouTuber while aiming at someone else in Harlem last month has been arrested by the NYPD. Mohamed Sawaneh, 21, was arrested on murder charges stemming from the fatal July drive-by shooting of 37-year-old Jeremy Cummings. Sawaneh, who lives in NYCHA’s Webster Houses in The Bronx, is accused of opening fire while driving along Eight Avenue and West 118th Street on the afternoon of July 2. Cummings was shot in the back and abdomen and was pronounced dead after being rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside.

Jeremy Cummings ran the YouTube channel JermSportsTV, which had more than 35,000 subscribers. He posted short edited clips from sporting events and also of the football video game Madden on his channel. Cummings was believed to have been an unintended target, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. He had no criminal history, gang affiliation, and was simply standing on the corner with a group of friends at the time of the shooting.

After the shooting, the gunman tried to flee but got boxed in by a van and abandoned his car. He then stole a Citi Bike from a pair of teens on the sidewalk in an attempt to escape. Sawaneh has no prior criminal history, and the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation by the police. In addition to one count of second-degree murder, Sawaneh was charged with first-degree robbery, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting it, and two counts of criminal possession of a firearm.
