Toronto is known for its diverse culinary scene, and now Eglinton-Lawrence Coun. Mike Colle is suggesting the city host an international pizza festival to showcase the city’s love for this ubiquitous dish. In a letter to the economic and community development committee, Colle expressed his belief that the festival would not only support small and local businesses but also give residents the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of traditional and unique pizza styles found across Toronto. The festival would be a celebration of Toronto’s culinary excellence and would draw in visitors from all over to experience the city’s food scene.

Colle’s proposal was first presented to city council in June with support from York South-Weston Coun. Frances Nunziata. He sought council approval to request a report on how the city could support the creation of an international pizza festival, in collaboration with relevant city divisions, the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (BIA), and culinary industry partners. Colle believes that Toronto’s reputation for its incredible food scene, along with the strong opinions of residents on their favorite dishes, makes it the perfect location for such a festival. The proposal was referred to the economic and community development committee for further consideration.

The proposed pizza festival is set to take place next year and would be organized and executed by a committee of Toronto restaurateurs, ranging from larger establishments to smaller local businesses. Colle has been in communication with the general manager of economic development and culture to explore how his division could support the festival, drawing upon their experience with events such as Summerlicious and Winterlicious. The festival is seen as an opportunity to support the local restaurant industry and BIAs, while also providing a platform for showcasing the diversity and creativity of Toronto’s pizza scene.

The city council will consider referring Colle’s proposal to the general manager for further action at the economic and community development committee meeting on September 18th. The festival has the potential to become a city-wide celebration of pizza, bringing together residents, visitors, and businesses to enjoy and appreciate the range of pizza styles available in Toronto. Colle’s vision for the festival includes not only showcasing traditional pizza styles but also highlighting the unique and diverse blended styles that have emerged across the city, reflecting Toronto’s multicultural and innovative food culture.

If approved, the Toronto International Pizza Festival could become a significant addition to the city’s calendar of food-related events and street festivals. The festival would provide a platform for local businesses to showcase their offerings, attract visitors to different neighborhoods, and foster a sense of community around a shared love for pizza. With hundreds of pizzerias and restaurants serving up this beloved dish, the festival would offer a unique opportunity for Torontonians to support small businesses, explore new culinary experiences, and celebrate the city’s vibrant food scene. Colle’s proposal aligns with Toronto’s reputation as a culinary destination and highlights the city’s commitment to promoting and celebrating its diverse food culture.
