The Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, opened the G7 Internal Affairs meeting in Mirabella Eclano, in the province of Avellino, stating that the current meeting will be a rich opportunity for reflection that will strengthen the shared vision of G7 countries during a sensitive historical and geopolitical moment. Piantedosi emphasized the importance of coordinating European countries towards a common policy to manage flows and open up regular channels of entry while fighting against traffickers. He highlighted the need to address various threats to society and democratic values, stressing the responsibility of ensuring citizens’ security for the development of individual and social rights.

The meeting focused on negative repercussions from conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, which contribute to societal polarization and increase the risk of individuals adopting violent ideologies and committing terrorist acts. Piantedosi emphasized the importance of enhancing prevention capabilities to ensure readiness. While he did not raise an alarm for Italy, he stressed the significance of attention. The program included discussions on crises, cybersecurity, combating synthetic drugs, and focusing on specific prevention measures to address new challenges posed by evolving security threats.

The second session of the summit centered on cybersecurity challenges, with a focus on criminal activities online and protecting vulnerable web users. Discussions also delved into investigating financial crimes involving cryptocurrencies. The event highlighted efforts to prevent the spread of synthetic drugs, particularly Fentanyl, to prevent further casualties. The program also featured a working dinner on Artificial Intelligence, with international guests discussing the risks and opportunities presented by the technology in the field of security and crime prevention.

The following day’s discussions revolved around migration strategies, particularly focusing on combating human trafficking, with specific attention to the Africa region. Colleagues from Algeria and Libya, along with the High Commissioner for Refugees and the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration, participated in the debates. The agenda aimed to address the heinous crime of migrant trafficking and develop strategies to combat it effectively, highlighting the need for regional cooperation to tackle this complex issue.
