ADT, a well-known home security company with a long history, is working to keep up with the ever-evolving technology and competition in the marketplace. In 2023, ADT has integrated with Google Nest products, allowing customers to control their security systems with Google Assistant. An updated app unveiled in 2023 allows customers to control all their devices and settings in one place, addressing previous concerns about the system. However, despite these updates, ADT’s steep price makes it one of the least enticing professional home security systems on the market.

CNET has been testing various home security systems, including professionally installed ones like ADT. Testing involves purchasing or acquiring the system, installing it according to company instructions, and evaluating individual devices as well as the system as a whole. ADT’s installation process was lengthy and intrusive, with passcode security concerns. Once installed, ADT’s system offers effective monitoring and smart home functionality, but users have to navigate multiple control centers and a clunky app interface.

ADT’s pricing and plans include monitoring services starting at $46 per month, with additional charges for smart home automation and video storage. Contracts with ADT range from 12 to 60 months in length, with significant cancellation fees. The hardware prices for ADT’s devices are higher compared to DIY systems, but are in line with other professionally installed systems. ADT’s hardware costs for a comprehensive setup can range from $3,000 to $4,000, making it one of the most expensive options available.

While ADT’s sensors and cameras are competitively priced compared to similar systems, the system’s reliance on the online portal for advanced features is a drawback. The installation process was cumbersome, and passcode security measures were lacking. Despite impressive smart home automation capabilities and recent integrations with Google Nest, ADT’s high prices and contract requirements make it less appealing than competitors. Until ADT improves its sales, installation procedures, pricing, and control interface, it may struggle to keep up in the fast-moving home security market.
