The emergency call center in Barrow County, Georgia was flooded with calls on Sept. 4 regarding a school shooting at Apalachee High School. Many of the calls were not released to the public due to state law exemptions for calls involving minors. The calls spiked around 10:20 a.m. when 14-year-old Colt Gray began shooting. Some callers reported hearing people yelling outside the school, while others were put on hold due to the high call volume at the time of the shooting.

Parents of students at neighboring elementary and middle schools also flooded the 911 lines seeking information about the situation at Apalachee High School. Some parents received distressing calls from their children who were inside the school during the shooting. The 911 operators tried to reassure them that officers were on the scene. However, the 1,900 students at Apalachee will begin returning to school the week of Sept. 23.
