Two Russian strikes on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, resulted in the deaths of eight civilians and injuries to at least 10 people. The attacks, which occurred in the early morning and afternoon, were carried out using drones according to Ukraine’s national police, while regional officials stated that Russian forces used missiles and bombs. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that the strike hit residential areas, damaging several high-rise buildings, dormitories, administrative buildings, a shop, a petrol station, a service station, and cars.

The first attack took place just after midnight, resulting in six deaths and 10 injuries in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv. The death toll later rose to seven. A second attack later in the day caused at least one more death, along with injuries. U.S. Ambassador Bridget A. Brink condemned the attacks, emphasizing the need to support Ukraine in defending its people against such unprovoked aggression. Kharkiv, located in Ukraine’s northeast, has been a frequent target of Russian attacks, with incidents intensifying in recent weeks.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of Staff, Andriy Yermak, identified Kharkiv as a likely target for a new Russian offensive in May or June. Kharkiv regional Governor Oleh Synehubov reported additional strikes on a residential building and a village north of the city, although no casualties were reported in these incidents. Air raid alerts were in effect for Kharkiv and most of the country, including the capital Kyiv, following the attacks. Ukraine’s military claimed that its air defenses successfully intercepted and destroyed a significant number of drones and missiles launched by Russia.

The attacks on Kharkiv come amidst continued tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with fears of a broader conflict escalating. The strikes on residential areas in the city have resulted in multiple civilian casualties and significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. The international community has condemned the attacks and called for support for Ukraine in defending against further aggression. The situation remains tense, with air raid alerts in effect and ongoing fears of additional strikes. Ukraine’s military continues to respond to threats, including the destruction of drones and missiles launched by Russian forces.
