Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with the attack on former New York Gov. David Paterson and his 20-year-old stepson as they were walking their dog in Manhattan on Friday night. The two teens, aged 12 and 13, were charged with second-degree gang assault and third-degree gang assault, respectively. Police have been searching for five suspects involved in the attack, which left Paterson with a head injury and his stepson with a more severe injury to his face. The former governor and his stepson were treated at a local hospital following the incident.

Paterson, who is 70 years old and legally blind, explained that the altercation began when his stepson confronted three of the teens who were climbing a fire escape. After the matter was seemingly settled, Paterson and his stepson encountered the same teens later on Second Avenue, leading to an argument. As the teens argued with his stepson, two other adults intervened which escalated into a physical fight. Paterson mentioned that he was punched in the face and on the shoulder, and he defended himself by throwing one of the attackers against a McDonald’s window.

Descriptions of the five suspects have been released by the police in order to aid in their identification. Paterson and his stepson were released from the hospital early Saturday morning following the attack. The ex-Democratic governor’s spokesperson, Sean Darcy, expressed Paterson’s gratitude for the quick response from the police and the support they have received. Paterson served as governor of New York from 2008 to 2010, and his wife is Mary Sliwa, the ex-wife of Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa.

The attack on Paterson and his stepson highlights the need for public safety measures and awareness of violence in communities. The incident began with a confrontation between the stepson and three teenagers, which escalated into a physical altercation when two additional adults became involved. Paterson’s account of the event sheds light on the circumstances that led to the attack and his actions in response to the aggression. The release of the suspects’ descriptions calls for public cooperation in identifying them and bringing them to justice.

The repercussions of this attack on a former governor and his family raise concerns about the safety of public figures and ordinary citizens alike. The violent confrontation underscores the importance of vigilance and self-defense in potentially dangerous situations. Paterson’s call for refraining from exploiting the incident for personal or political gain emphasizes the need for compassion and support in the aftermath of such events. The outpouring of support from various sectors of society reflects a united front against violence and a collective effort to address and prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the investigation into the attack continues, the collaboration between law enforcement and the community becomes crucial in apprehending the remaining suspects and holding them accountable for their actions. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of solidarity and cooperation in promoting safety and justice in society. Paterson’s resilience and willingness to share his experience contribute to raising awareness about the impact of violence and the importance of standing up against it. The support received by the former governor and his family reflects a shared commitment to combatting violence and ensuring the well-being of all individuals in the community.
