The uncommitted delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago were denied their chief request from Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign to have a Palestinian American speak at the convention. The delegates, who were elected in protest of President Joe Biden’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza, had been signaling that they would commit to Harris if their request was granted. Despite twice-daily press conferences reiterating their request, they had received no definitive answer until the third night of the convention when they were informed that their request had been denied.

Abbas Alawieh, a Michigan delegate and former congressional chief of staff who acted as the spokesperson for the delegates, received a call Wednesday evening from an official informing him that their request for a Palestinian American speaker was rejected. The delegates expressed disappointment at the news and announced their intention to remain outside the convention hall in the hope that organizers would change their minds. While only 30 uncommitted delegates were present among nearly 4,700 gathered at the United Center, an additional 250 Harris delegates signed a letter supporting the demand for a ceasefire and arms embargo on Israel.

Despite the setback, the delegates remained determined to continue advocating for their cause. The decision to deny their request could be a turning point for the delegates, who had previously kept their distance from protesters outside the secure area and disruptions by non-delegate protesters inside the arena. The delegates, who had been encouraged by signals from Harris and DNC organizers, felt let down by the final decision. Spokespeople for the convention and the Harris campaign did not offer immediate comments on the situation, leaving the delegates to ponder their next steps.

The delegates had been hoping for an opportunity to have a Palestinian American address the convention in order to highlight their concerns about U.S. support for Israel’s actions in Gaza. Their refusal to commit to Harris without this concession showed their dedication to their cause and the importance they placed on representation within the Democratic Party. Despite the disappointment of being denied their request, the delegates remained united and prepared to continue advocating for their beliefs.

The delegates’ focus on pushing for a ceasefire and arms embargo on Israel demonstrated their commitment to addressing the conflict in Gaza and standing up for Palestinian rights. Their willingness to challenge the status quo within the Democratic Party reflected a desire for policy changes that aligned with their values and beliefs. While the outcome of their efforts at the convention might not have been what they hoped for, the delegates remained resilient and determined to keep fighting for justice and equality.

As the convention continued, the uncommitted delegates maintained their presence outside the convention hall, sending a message that they were not backing down from their demands. Their refusal to compromise on their principles highlighted the importance of representation and accountability within the political process. While they may have faced disappointment in the short term, the delegates’ perseverance and unity in the face of adversity showcased their commitment to creating change within the Democratic Party and beyond.
