A survey found that 39% of Americans pretend to be influencers on vacation by taking vlog-style videos and posting more on social media. More than half of respondents see using social media while traveling as a good thing and enjoy seeing scenic views, landmarks, and food and drinks in travel-related posts. Respondents planned to post selfies, beach or pool pictures, and document every minute of their travels, with some even putting in the effort to edit vlogs or videos for others to see. A quarter of those who posted on social media while traveling admitted to feeling guilty about not being present in the moment.

Many respondents would post similar content from their travels, including selfies and beach or pool pictures. Half of social media users would document every minute of their travels, and a majority would likely post about their activities. While half would post at various points throughout their vacation, 30% would wait until the end of the trip to share their vacation activities. A significant number of respondents have felt disappointed when their vacation content did not receive as many likes as they hoped, showing that social media validation is important to them.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents said that reminiscing on old social media posts of previous trips inspires them to plan future travels. Social media has become a digital scrapbook for many, allowing them to look back on past trips and experiences. This content not only serves as a way to preserve memories but also ignites a sense of adventure in others, shaping the future of travel. Half of social media users ranked a fully charged phone as one of the most important items to prepare when traveling, indicating the importance of staying connected through social media during their trips.

Social media serves as a valuable tool for tapping into local insights, learning from travel bloggers and experts, and discovering new destinations.

The survey highlighted travel-planning hacks and tips shared on social media, such as vacuum sealing clothes to fit more in luggage, rolling clothes instead of folding, and bundling to get the best value. Tips included creating a custom map on Google Maps, using credit cards or prepaid cards when traveling, and asking locals for recommendations. Travelers also shared advice on creating a travel first aid kit, wearing heavy clothes instead of packing them, and preparing to live without some comforts during their trips.
