Labiaplasty surgery, also known as “designer vagina” surgery, has seen a significant increase in recent years, with a 217% rise in the US between 2012 and 2017 and a 20% increase between 2017 and 2021. The procedure involves reshaping the vaginal lips to remove excess tissue in order to make them less prominent and more in line with the labia major. Dr. Usha Rajagopal, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, has observed a noticeable increase in these procedures, which she has been performing since 1999.

Studies have shown that labiaplasty surgery is not only physically safe but can also have a positive impact on women’s mental health. Women typically undergo this procedure to address functional issues such as discomfort during sex caused by the size or shape of the labia minora, as well as aesthetic concerns. Improved mental health has been reported as a significant benefit of the surgery, enhancing self-image and sexual life in many cases.

Researchers from Semmelweis University in Budapest conducted a review of women who underwent labiaplasty surgery and found that 95% of patients were satisfied with the results. The procedure has a very low complication rate of just 0.5%, making it safer than other cosmetic surgeries such as eye color change or Brazilian butt lifts. The study also found that procedures done with radiofrequency had a lower risk of complications, minimal recovery time, and high patient satisfaction, although more data is needed on this type of labiaplasty.

Dr. Usha Rajagopal emphasizes that labia come in all shapes and sizes, and it is important for women to understand that there is a broad spectrum of what is considered normal. She believes that if a woman prefers a less prominent labial appearance and feels that it will enhance her comfort during sex and intimacy, labiaplasty can be a good option. However, she also stresses the importance of ensuring that patients are making the decision for themselves and not under pressure from a partner.

While the decision to undergo labiaplasty surgery can be driven by various factors, including both functional and aesthetic concerns, experts recommend involving psychologists in the decision-making process to ensure that patients are choosing the procedure for the right reasons. It is essential for women to be informed about the risks and benefits of labiaplasty and to have realistic expectations about the results. Overall, the increase in labiaplasty surgeries in recent years reflects a growing trend of women seeking to improve their appearance and mental well-being through cosmetic procedures.
