Angie and I reminisce about our wild teenage years, discussing the risky adventures we embarked on as young girls. We clung to each other as we navigated the tumultuous waters of adolescence, finding solace in our friendship. Despite both having single mothers, we found ways to rebel and escape the confines of our everyday lives. Angie would often tell her mother she was having a sleepover at my house, only to sneak off to the beach town of Torquay to drink Moselle and flirt with surfer boys.

Now, at the age of 60, Angie and I have reconnected on Facebook and have been talking on the phone. She begins by apologizing for her repetitive speech patterns and struggles with memory due to brain damage and an inoperable brain tumor. She also reveals her struggles with alcoholism and ADHD, which was diagnosed later in life. I realize now that her impulsiveness and wild behavior in our youth were signs of her underlying issues.

As we catch up, Angie opens up about her tumultuous past, including two abusive marriages and five children. Her first husband was violent and abusive, physically harming her on multiple occasions. Despite the trauma she endured, Angie remains resilient and continues to persevere. She also shares that her daughter recently served time in prison in Brisbane but refuses to disclose the reason for her incarceration, highlighting the challenges her family has faced.

Despite her struggles, Angie displays moments of insight and self-awareness, reflecting on her strained relationship with her mother. She recalls her mother’s jealousy and resentment towards her, leading to conflicts and tension in their household. I remember her mother’s disapproval of our friendship, labeling me as a “bad influence” and attempting to keep us apart. Angie’s mother’s own struggles with polio and physical disabilities may have contributed to her feelings of envy towards her daughter.

Looking back on our teenage years, I realize how Angie’s vibrant spirit and beauty captivated those around her, making her a target for jealousy and insecurity. Her carefree nature and zest for life were both a blessing and a curse, leading her into dangerous situations and toxic relationships. Despite the hardships she has faced, Angie remains resilient and determined, refusing to let her past define her future. Our friendship has weathered the storms of life, connecting us across decades and reminding us of the bonds that sustain us through the darkest of times.
