Donna Ongsiako, a mother from New Jersey, was attacked by a random teen named Brennan Doyle who was high on magic mushrooms. In July 2013, Doyle forced his way into Ongsiako’s Colts Neck home and stabbed her, leaving her fighting for her life. Ongsiako recounted that she opened the door to let her cat out when she was confronted by the knife-wielding intruder in the middle of the night. She tried to shut the door, but Doyle pushed his way in and demanded her car keys, purse, and a lighter before attacking her. He reportedly said, “You dead bitch” before plunging the knife into her chest.

Despite being severely injured, Ongsiako managed to drag herself upstairs to call for help after Doyle fled the scene. She was able to provide a brief description of her attacker to 911 before losing consciousness. Ongsiako underwent a seven-hour surgery to repair the damage caused by the attack. Doyle was not apprehended until several months later when DNA evidence linked him to the crime through Ongsiako’s stolen car. Doyle admitted to using hallucinogenic mushrooms and feeling paranoid before the attack, claiming that the drugs turned him into a monster that night.

During his 2015 trial, Doyle pleaded guilty to carjacking and attempted murder and was sentenced to 15 years in state prison. Despite the traumatic experience, Ongsiako has since created a victim support group to help others who have been involved in random attacks. She shared that she continues to rebuild her life after the attack, emphasizing the importance of persevering and doing what is necessary to move forward each day. Ongsiako’s resilience and determination in the face of such a devastating incident serve as an inspiration to others who have experienced similar trauma and adversity.

The harrowing attack serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by drugs and substance abuse, as well as the lasting impact of random acts of violence on individuals and their families. Ongsiako’s experience highlights the importance of seeking support and healing after such traumatic events, as well as the resilience and strength that can be found in the face of adversity. Ultimately, Ongsiako’s story is a testament to the power of survival and the ability to overcome even the most horrifying of circumstances with courage and determination. Her willingness to help others who have gone through similar experiences demonstrates the resilience and compassion that can emerge from even the darkest of situations.
