A mother, Gloria Asamoah, was indicted on murder charges after her 5-year-old twins were found dead in their Bronx apartment. The twins, George and Gianna Kantanka, were discovered lying lifeless on the living room floor back in December. Initially believed to have died from a medical emergency, an autopsy revealed they had been smothered. Asamoah, who was held in a psychiatric ward following the incident, was remanded without bail during her arraignment in Bronx Supreme Court.
Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark expressed sadness over the tragedy and stated that the kids were killed by their mother, who would be held accountable for her actions. Asamoah was indicted on multiple charges related to the murder of her children, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and manslaughter. The mother, who is originally from Ghana, had been undergoing psychiatric evaluation and was not free to leave the psych ward until cleared by doctors, at which point she would be taken into custody by the NYPD.
The twins had special needs and had been kept home from school on the day they died, with their father at work in Port Chester at the time. George had been sick with a cold for two weeks, while Gianna was suffering from an ear infection and had behavioral issues at school, including biting and spitting. Asamoah was said to be so upset by her children’s deaths that she required hospitalization. The children were found vomiting and foaming at the mouth, and were discovered by authorities in December.
Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Asamoah had allegedly smothered the twins, leading to her indictment months after the incident. Kenny, the Chief of Detectives, explained that Asamoah would remain in the psych ward until cleared by doctors and would then be taken into custody. The father of the twins, who was at work when they were found dead, was not expected to face charges in the case. The deaths of the twins were deemed senseless and tragic, occurring just before the holidays.
Through the court hearing and statements made by law enforcement officials, it was clear that the mother was being held responsible for the deaths of her children. The tragic incident left the community shocked and saddened, as the twins were described as appearing lifeless on the living room floor. Asamoah appeared in court wearing an orange jail jumpsuit and looked slightly dazed during her arraignment. She was indicted on multiple counts of murder and manslaughter, facing serious charges related to the deaths of her young son and daughter.
