The 2023/24 A-League Women regular season came to a thrilling conclusion with Sydney FC and Melbourne City battling it out for the Premiership title. Sydney FC, aiming for a fourth consecutive title, lost to Melbourne Victory, allowing Melbourne City to claim the Premiers Plate.

Throughout the season, Sydney FC and Melbourne City were neck and neck in the Premiership race. Sydney FC started off on shaky ground, losing two of their first four games, while Melbourne City looked strong, dropping points only three times in the first half of the season.

However, the tables turned midway through the season as Melbourne City suffered a string of poor results, giving Sydney FC the opportunity to climb to the top of the standings with just one loss from December to the penultimate matchday. Sydney FC needed just one win in their last two games to secure the Premiers Plate.

In a crucial match against Melbourne Victory, Sydney FC faltered, losing by four goals, giving Melbourne City the chance to clinch the title with a win against Perth Glory. Melbourne City came through, with Rhianna Pollicina and 15-year-old Shelby McMahon scoring to secure the Premiers Plate for the first time in four years.

In the finals bracket, Sydney FC finished in second place, while Western United were also safely through to the finals. The Newcastle Jets secured their spot with a massive eight-goal win over Adelaide United, leaving the Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory to fight for the remaining spot.

Sydney FC will look to defend their title in the knockout stages, while Melbourne Victory aims to win their third Grand Final in four years. However, Melbourne City, as the Premiership winners, are considered the favorites to lift the trophy, as they have previously gone on to win two trophies in seasons when they clinched the Premiership.
