Netflix has released its new limited crime series Ripley on April 4th, giving viewers a chance to dive into a suspenseful thriller while learning about the talented Ripley cast. The show, based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” consists of eight episodes and is written, directed, and executive produced by Steve Zaillian, known for his work on films like The Irishman and The Night Of. Zaillian drew inspiration from the book’s black-and-white cover, using this aesthetic throughout the series to match the sinister and dark tone of the story.

Andrew Scott takes on the lead role of Tom Ripley, a con artist in New York City in the early 1960s who finds himself in a web of deceit, fraud, and murder when he is hired to convince a man’s son, Dickie Greenleaf, to return to the US from Italy. The series’ director, Zaillian, described Ripley as a petty criminal who aspires to a better life, and praised Scott’s ability to portray the complex character with his range and versatility. Scott is best known for his roles in Sherlock, Fleabag, and Spectre, and has received critical acclaim for his work in projects like All of Us Strangers.

Dakota Fanning plays Marge Sherwood, Dickie’s girlfriend who becomes suspicious of Ripley’s intentions during their time in Italy. Fanning’s extensive career as a child actor in films like I Am Sam and The Cat in the Hat has evolved into roles in more mature projects like The Alienist and The Equalizer 3. Johnny Flynn portrays Dickie Greenleaf, bringing out the character’s sweet naïveté and carefree attitude as a wealthy artist living off his trust fund. In addition to his acting career, Flynn is a musician who fronts the band Johnny Flynn & the Sussex Wit, with roles in Emma, Lovesick, and Les Miserables.

Eliot Sumner takes on the role of Freddie Mills, Dickie’s affluent and judgmental friend who suspects Ripley of ulterior motives. Sumner, known for their music career and breakout role in The Gentlemen, impressed Zaillian with their quiet, sophisticated portrayal of the character. Maurizio Lombardi stars as Inspector Ravini, the Italian homicide detective entangled in a chess-like dynamic with Ripley. Lombardi’s international breakthrough came with The Young Pope, and he is set to appear in Prime Video’s Citadel: Diana spinoff.

Kenneth Lonergan makes an appearance as Mr. Greenleaf, the father who tasks Ripley with bringing his son back from Italy. Lonergan, an award-winning director, screenwriter, and playwright, has earned accolades for films like Manchester by the Sea and plays like This Is Our Youth and The Waverly Gallery. Netflix’s Ripley offers viewers a dark and compelling story of manipulation, mistrust, and crime, brought to life by a talented cast and a visionary director. Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow previously portrayed these characters in the critically acclaimed 1999 film adaptation, but fans can now enjoy a fresh take on this classic tale through this new series.
