Photojournalist Samuel Mena Jr. set himself on fire outside the White House on Saturday in protest against Israel’s war in Gaza and America’s support for the regime. The man lit his left arm on fire and screamed in pain while claiming that the media was spreading misinformation. Law enforcement officers quickly surrounded Mena and extinguished the flames, with one bystander pouring water on his arm. A blog post on Mena’s website suggested that he had only intended to burn his arm as a form of protest.

In the blog post, Mena expressed his solidarity with the children in Gaza who had lost limbs in the conflict, stating, “To the 10 thousand children in Gaza that have lost a limb in this conflict, I give my left arm to you.” He hoped that his actions would raise awareness for their suffering and ensure that their voices were heard. Mena had initially attempted to end the “genocide” in Gaza through a documentary but eventually gave up on the effort, believing it would not make a difference.

Mena’s social media profiles indicate that he worked for the local CBS affiliate AZFamily and graduated from Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. After being transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities confirmed that Mena’s actions were an act of civil disobedience. They emphasized the importance of peaceful first amendment activities in the District of Columbia and vowed to hold accountable those who engage in criminal acts during protests.

Earlier in the year, Senior Airman Aaron Bushnell, a member of the U.S. Air Force, also set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in protest against Israel’s campaign in Gaza. In a recorded video, Bushnell declared that he would no longer be complicit in genocide. These acts of self-immolation serve as dramatic and extreme forms of protest against ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and America’s support for certain regimes.

The incident involving Mena comes amidst ongoing violence in Gaza and continued tensions in the region. While his actions may have been extreme, they highlight the desperation and frustration felt by individuals who seek to draw attention to human rights abuses and injustices. The response from authorities underscores the importance of upholding the right to peaceful protest while also ensuring public safety. The impact of such acts of protest, while extreme, can serve to ignite conversations and raise awareness about pressing global issues.
