After experiencing a traumatic pregnancy and near-death experience during childbirth, Louise Thompson has shared her harrowing story in her new memoir, Lucky: Learning To Live Again. Louise had previously suffered a devastating miscarriage at eight weeks but was delighted when she reached the 12-week mark with her son Leo. However, a traumatic labour resulted in her nearly bleeding to death after her womb tore during delivery. Despite her concerns and requests for an elective cesarean, her fears were dismissed by medical staff. She endured excruciating pain and a long labor before an emergency c-section was performed to save her and her baby.

During the ordeal, Louise suffered a life-threatening hemorrhage due to a nicked artery, resulting in a three-hour operation where she lost over three liters of blood. Despite surviving the surgery, she faced additional complications and serious bleeding at home. Louise has since had multiple surgeries, including having part of her colon removed and a stoma bag fitted. Due to her health complications, she has been advised against another pregnancy due to Asherman’s syndrome. The traumatic experience also took a toll on her relationship with her partner, Ryan Libbey, who struggled with his own PTSD following the birth.

Speaking openly about her struggles with PTSD, Louise shared that the traumatic experience will stay with her for the rest of her life. Despite the challenges, she tries to focus on the positives and be grateful for the things she has. The aftermath of the traumatic birth and health issues had a significant impact on her mental health and relationship with Ryan, causing strain and nearly leading to a breakup. However, they have worked through the challenges and are prioritizing their mental health and well-being.

Following the traumatic experience, Louise’s memoir serves as a powerful testament to her strength and resilience in the face of adversity. She has shared her story to raise awareness about the realities of childbirth and the importance of mental health support for new parents. Despite the trauma and challenges she has faced, Louise remains grateful for the support of her partner, family, and health professionals. Her memoir, Lucky: Learning To Live Again, offers a raw and honest account of her journey through one of the most difficult times in her life. Through sharing her story, Louise hopes to inspire others to seek help and support during challenging times.
