A Long Island man named Munim Raghid, 26, was charged with animal cruelty for the second time in a month after he neglected to get necessary medical care for his Kangal Shepherd puppy who was hit by a car. Raghid was initially arrested in December for starving one of his dogs to the point of emaciation. Despite being ordered not to own any other animals, Raghid continued to keep three more Kangal Shepherds, including the injured puppy found steps away from his home on New Year’s Eve by a Good Samaritan.
The Good Samaritan discovered the injured puppy and quickly took it to Atlantic Coast Veterinary Specialists where it was found to have a fractured pelvis and back legs. While trying to locate the owner, the neighbor learned that Raghid had taken the puppy back home against medical advice. Members of the District Attorney’s Biological, Environmental, and Animal Safety Team executed a search warrant at Raghid’s home on New Year’s Day and found three dogs, including the injured pup. Raghid was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and criminal contempt for defying the judge’s orders.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney expressed his commitment to investigating and prosecuting every reported act of animal cruelty to the fullest extent of the law. The wounded puppy and another dog found at Raghid’s home are now available for adoption through the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter. However, the injured puppy requires extensive surgery before it can be adopted. Raghid is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges of animal cruelty and criminal contempt.
The case involving Raghid reflects a disturbing pattern of neglect towards his animals, having already faced animal cruelty charges once before. Despite being instructed not to own any more animals, Raghid continued to keep multiple dogs, one of which suffered serious injuries due to lack of proper care. The involvement of a Good Samaritan and the prompt actions of authorities led to the rescue and medical treatment of the injured puppy, showcasing the importance of community involvement in reporting animal cruelty cases.
The efforts of law enforcement, particularly the District Attorney’s BEAST investigative team, demonstrate a commitment to holding individuals accountable for acts of animal cruelty. The pursuit of justice in this case is reflected in the charges brought against Raghid and the ongoing care provided to the injured puppy. The decision to put the dogs up for adoption through the local shelter ensures that they will have the opportunity to find safe and caring homes. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the consequences of neglecting the well-being of animals.
