While he happily knocked back the first five wines, he soon learned it would not be as easy as he initially believed. “There were some good wines early on and I thought, ‘This is going to be OK,” he said. “But the wine at stop 15 was all kinds of horror.” The fifteenth glass was a Mâcon Chardonnay from 2017, which he guessed correctly. While Gilbey’s stunt might seem mad to some, the 52-year-old is a seasoned veteran of sampling wine and has built up a sizeable online following with his humorous videos rating reds and whites, including giving his thoughts on wetherspoons Wetherspoon’s own offerings. Gilbey, known as the Wine Guy online, dreamed up the idea in a bid to raise money for the Sobell House Hospice Charity where staff nursed his mum Caroline during her last days and he knows she would be proud of his achievement. “I know my mum would be laughing her socks off at it,” he said.
