Belgium’s Lebanese ambassador Fadi Hajali has denounced Israel for targeting civilians and violating human rights. In an interview with Euronews, Hajali expressed grave concern over the escalating Israeli attacks on Lebanon, which he described as an “existential threat” to the Lebanese people. He highlighted the high number of casualties, with over 500 people reportedly killed in a single day of bombardment. Hajali called on the international community to intervene and help resolve the conflict, while also urging the European Union to consider imposing sanctions on Israel. He accused Israel of indiscriminately targeting the defenceless population of Lebanon, a violation of international human rights law.

The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, has voiced concerns about the risk of a “full-blown war” in the region and called for an immediate ceasefire. Despite this, the EU has not yet announced any sanctions against Israel. Hajali expressed gratitude for the EU’s economic and humanitarian support, which funds the Lebanese army and hospitals, as well as for Borrell’s condemnatory statements. However, he urged the EU to take stronger action by imposing sanctions on Israel or reevaluating the EU-Israel relationship. Israeli Defence Forces claim to have targeted militant Hezbollah group members, but Hajali emphasized that the conflict extends beyond this to include attacks on Lebanon as a whole.

Hajali stressed that the conflict is not just against Hezbollah but is a war against the entire country and its civilian population. He called for an immediate end to the aggression by Israel and emphasized the need for unity in denouncing the ongoing attacks. The ambassador highlighted the importance of stopping the war and preventing further casualties among innocent civilians. He reiterated the urgency of intervention by the international community to bring about a resolution to the conflict and restore peace in the region. Hajali’s plea for an end to the violence and for solidarity in denouncing Israeli aggression reflects the urgent need for a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

The situation in Lebanon has become increasingly dire, with a rising death toll and widespread destruction caused by Israeli attacks. Hajali’s condemnation of Israel’s actions and call for international intervention underscore the severity of the situation and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution. The ambassador’s appeal to the European Union to consider sanctions against Israel demonstrates the pressing need for stronger measures to address the escalating conflict and protect the rights of Lebanese civilians. As tensions continue to mount in the region, the international community must act swiftly to prevent further loss of life and work towards a lasting peace in Lebanon.

Hajali’s plea for an immediate ceasefire and an end to Israeli aggression reflects the deep concern for the safety and well-being of the Lebanese people. The ambassador’s condemnation of the indiscriminate targeting of civilians by Israel underscores the violation of international human rights law and the need for accountability. The European Union’s response to the crisis, including economic and humanitarian support, is acknowledged by Hajali, but he urges the EU to take stronger action in order to address the root causes of the conflict. As the situation in Lebanon continues to deteriorate, Hajali’s calls for unity and solidarity in denouncing Israeli aggression highlight the urgency of the crisis and the imperative of international intervention to bring about a peaceful resolution.
