Fall has arrived, bringing with it the beautiful colors of changing leaves in many parts of the United States. Leaf peeping, the act of traveling to witness nature’s annual kaleidoscope, is a popular activity that contributes billions of dollars to the economy, especially in New England and New York. This year, some of the most vibrant foliage displays are expected in the Midwest, particularly in states like Michigan and Illinois. AccuWeather predicts powerful, popping colors in upstate New York, parts of Pennsylvania, and a more typical color pattern in New England.

Maine, the most forested state in the country, is expected to have a breathtaking foliage season this year. The state’s fall foliage spokesperson, Gale Ross, attributes this to an abundance of daily sunshine and just the right amount of rainfall. The state’s forest pathologist, Aaron Bergdahl, credits the excellent growing season for trees, which supports tree health and resilience leading to brilliant fall colors throughout Maine. The timing of the fall colors peak varies across the U.S., with Maine experiencing peak foliage in the northern part of the state in late September and coastal areas closer to Halloween.

The change in leaf color is a result of the transition from summer to fall, with cooler temperatures and shorter days causing the breakdown of chlorophyll in leaves. However, weather conditions associated with climate change have disrupted recent leaf peeping seasons. Drought, heatwaves, and extreme weather events like hurricanes can impact the vibrancy and timing of fall foliage. For example, a summer heatwave in the Pacific Northwest in 2021 caused foliage scorch, prematurely browning leaves. In Maine this year, leaf turn was sparse in most of the state as September approached, but northern Maine was already experiencing moderate color change.

Despite the challenges posed by climate change, states like Maine and New Hampshire are gearing up for an influx of tourists seeking to witness the incredible fall colors. New Hampshire expects about 3.7 million visitors, more than twice the state’s population, as people travel from all over the world to experience the beauty of fall foliage. Leaf peeping season is a reminder of the importance of preserving nature’s beauty and resilience in the face of changing environmental conditions. As the leaves continue to change colors and fall across the country, many are enjoying the beauty and wonder that fall brings.
