In yesterday’s evening, Matteo Salvini convened the federal council of the League. It is not an extraordinary council, he specifies, “no call to arms, I leave those to Macron”, he responds to a La7 journalist who asked him about it. “There are 4 thousand municipalities voting in the spring, we will analyze mayors and alliances and decide who will draft the program. There will be ministers, governors, and mayors.” The council will not be decisive for the candidacies for the upcoming European elections. The lists must be deposited by April 30th. The “Vannacci yes, Vannacci no, Vannacci maybe” issue has not been resolved – these are Salvini’s words – “I respect him, there is an open discussion, we will decide together,” explains the deputy prime minister. “As the secretary of the League – he assures – I am absolutely happy with what we are building in the government of the territories and the country. We have another four years ahead, we have local and regional elections to win and I am absolutely satisfied.”

Toward the Congress, all regional congresses of the League will take place after the European elections, followed by the federal one in the autumn. This is the line that Matteo Salvini has established at the federal council of the party, convened to define the strategy for the local elections and especially for the European elections. For the latter event, the leader wants “strong and open lists for a result in the double digits.” But within the party, there are those who, less optimistic, foresee results that are “not explosive” and are ready to ask for a change in the government’s strategy of the League after the European elections: do fewer things and communicate them better, that is the summary. In the meantime, the party explains, the Federal Committee has shown a “compact team alongside the secretary” and has created a working group for the program towards the European elections. It will include all the group leaders (between Europe and Italy), a minister, a governor, and a mayor. The goal is to arrive at “an alternative to the socialists and the left. Salvini considers not only the European elections important but also the American presidential elections. He openly cheers for a Republican in the White House because “cyclically war periods correspond to certain administrations and periods of peace to others.” In recent days, Salvini has also suggested a role for Luca Zaia as “defender of the Veneto in European land.” There is also speculation within the party of the mayor of Venice becoming the governor if the third term is not unblocked.

In conclusion, Matteo Salvini held a federal council meeting of the League to discuss the strategy for the upcoming elections, focusing on the local and European ones. Despite some internal concerns about the party’s performance in the elections, Salvini remains optimistic and emphasizes the importance of having strong and open lists for the European elections. The party has shown unity in supporting Salvini’s leadership and has established a working group to develop a program for the European elections. Salvini not only focuses on European politics but also expresses interest in the American presidential elections, openly supporting a Republican candidate. Additionally, there is speculation within the party about potential roles for key figures such as Luca Zaia and the mayor of Venice in future leadership positions. The party is gearing up for a busy political season ahead, with key elections in the coming years and Salvini remains confident in the direction they are heading.
