South Korean pistol shooter, Kim Yeji, has become an internet sensation following her debut at the Paris Olympics. Being likened to a blend of sci-fi sniper and diamond dealer, Kim’s striking presence on the shooting range with her unusual eyewear has piqued the interest of viewers worldwide. Broadcasting accounts such as ‘Women Posting Ws’, dubbed her posture and demeanor as having “the most aura” they’d ever seen, as they shared images of her in action. Her exceptional focus and cool composure have created an online buzz, with Kim widely compared to a futuristic, filmic assassin.

The eyewear that contributed to her unique appeal is not a fashion statement, but an apparatus aiding Kim’s performance. Fastened to her forehead, the device includes a small black rectangle over one eye to maximize focus, and a mechanical iris over the other to reduce blurring and enhance her targeting capability. Clips featuring Kim competing in the same gear, displaying a remarkably steady hand and tranquil poise, have circulated online, further sparking intrigue among audiences.

Kim, 31, hails from Maepo, a town located approximately 100 miles southeast of Seoul, and currently resides in Danyang. Her first foray into competitive shooting was in 2006, followed by winning a bronze medal in the 2010 World Junior Championships for the 10m air pistol. Kim’s interests outside of shooting are rather straightforward, and the International Sports Shooting Federation’s website reports her main hobby is ‘sleeping’.

Kim’s cinematic appeal increased when spectators noticed a stuffed toy elephant attached to her belt during the competition. Initially perceived as an eccentric trait, the elephant was revealed to be the lucky charm of her five-year-old daughter back in Korea. Following her achievement at the 10m medal ceremony, Kim expressed how excited she was to share the news with her daughter about her sudden internet fame and competition success.

Despite her worldwide acclaim and engagement from viewers, Kim did not secure the gold medal in the event. Instead, the victory was claimed by her compatriot, Oh Ye-jin, who surpassed her by just a few points and created an Olympic record of 243.2. Nonetheless, Kim demonstrated commendable sportsmanship, expressing delight at her teammate’s achievement and describing them as ‘little sister’. Kim further highlighted the pride she felt for their shared accomplishment for their nation.

Kim will have another opportunity to showcase her marksmanship at the upcoming 25-metre pistol event on Friday. In trailing remarks, she expressed confidence in her capabilities and insisted on securing the gold medal in her next event. If she were to win, that would surely set the internet abuzz once again.
