Justin Padgett, a teacher in Kentucky, shared his heartwarming story of adopting four siblings, including one of his former students, Jayden. The journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic when Jayden expressed to Padgett that he needed to be adopted. Jayden and his siblings were in foster care and needed a permanent home, and Jayden hoped that his teacher would be the one to adopt them. The Padgetts, who had been hoping to have a child of their own, saw this as an opportunity to grow their family and immediately began the process of becoming foster parents in April 2021.
The Padgetts took the four siblings, Jayden, Hailey, Alexis, and Jase, under their wing, starting with weekend visits and eventually welcoming them into their home at the end of July 2021. The siblings were part of a program called Wendy’s Wonderful Kids, which focuses on finding permanent homes for foster children, and the Padgetts were committed to keeping the siblings together. The family quickly outgrew their small farmhouse, prompting a move to a larger home in Danville. The adoption of the four siblings was finalized on March 3, 2022, marking a new chapter for the Padgetts and their growing family.
The Padgetts emphasized the importance of providing special love and attention to older children in foster care, who may have experienced trauma and need support as they navigate their teenage years. They highlighted the need for resources such as mental health support and guidance for educational and career paths. Despite the challenges that come with fostering and adopting older children, the Padgetts expressed their dedication to persevering through difficult times and working together as a family.
