Lisa Bluder, the coach of the Iowa women’s basketball team for the past 24 years, has announced her retirement. She led the Hawkeyes to the last two NCAA championship games and had a successful career, with a record of 528-254 at Iowa and 716-359 including her time at Drake. Her assistant, Jan Jensen, will take over as head coach after being by Bluder’s side for 24 years at Iowa and eight at Drake.

Bluder made the decision to retire after Iowa lost to South Carolina in the national title game and star Caitlin Clark finished her college career. In an open letter to fans, Bluder expressed gratitude for their support and reflected on the season with her team. After spending time with her husband, she realized it was time to step aside and focus on what the future holds for her and her family.

Jensen, who was an associate head coach under Bluder for 20 years, played for Bluder at Drake and has been working with her for a total of 24 years at Iowa. She expressed her excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to take over as head coach. Jensen praised Bluder for her mentorship, leadership, and friendship throughout their years working together and shared her pride in the accomplishments they achieved.

The past two years have been particularly successful for Iowa, with a 65-12 record and standout performances by Caitlin Clark. Bluder leaves behind a legacy of leadership and success, and Jensen is eager to continue building on that foundation as she steps into the head coaching role. The transition from Bluder to Jensen marks the end of an era for Iowa women’s basketball, but also signals a new chapter and a fresh start for the team.

Bluder’s retirement comes at a time when women’s college basketball is gaining more attention and recognition. The Iowa women’s basketball program has seen great success under Bluder’s leadership, and Jensen will now have the opportunity to continue that success and lead the team into a new era. With the support of fans and the dedication of the players and coaching staff, the Iowa women’s basketball team is poised for continued growth and accomplishments in the seasons to come.
