Israeli television aired previously withheld footage on Wednesday of five female army conscripts being seized by Hamas gunmen during an Oct. 7 raid that led to the Gaza war. The families of the captives hope the footage will pressure Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a truce with Hamas and secure the hostages’ release. The government sees the release of the footage as an opportunity to gain support, emphasizing the need to bring the captives home safely.

The three-minute clip shows the young women, dressed in pyjamas, being bound and forced into a jeep by the gunmen. Some of the captives appear bloodied and stunned. One of the conscripts, 19-year-old Naama Levy, pleads in English, mentioning her friends in Palestine. The gunmen are heard shouting derogatory remarks in Arabic, threatening and belittling the captives. The Hostages Families Forum, representing relatives of those held by Hamas, says the footage was recovered from body cameras worn by the attackers during the raid on the Nahal Oz base in southern Israel.

Israel reports that 1,200 people were killed and over 250 were abducted in the attack led by Hamas on Oct. 7. In response, Israel launched an offensive to eliminate the Islamist militant group, resulting in the deaths of more than 35,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities. Israel’s military confirms 286 Israeli soldiers have been killed in the conflict. Netanyahu’s government believes that continued military pressure will force Hamas to give in, while the families of the hostages fear for their loved ones’ safety, with concerns of potential sexual abuse of the women captives by Hamas.

The Hostages Families Forum calls for the Israeli government to immediately return to the negotiating table to secure the release of the captives. The group emphasizes the urgency of the situation and the need for swift action to ensure the safety and well-being of those still held by Hamas. The families of the hostages plead for support and assistance in bringing their loved ones home safely, expressing the emotional toll and suffering experienced by the captives and their families.

Hamas has denied allegations of sexual abuse by its members, but the families of the captives remain fearful for the women’s safety. Orly Gilboa, the mother of one of the captives, Daniela, appeals for any assistance that can be provided to bring the hostages home. The families express the agony of knowing their loved ones are in danger, and the importance of each passing minute in the effort to secure their release. Israel’s Foreign Ministry plans to show the footage to the ambassadors of Ireland, Norway, and Spain as part of efforts to address their governments’ preparations to recognize a Palestinian state, showing the impact of the captives’ plight on international relations.

The release of the footage has sparked renewed calls for action to secure the safe return of the captives held by Hamas. The visual evidence of the women being seized by gunmen highlights the urgency of the situation and the need for diplomatic efforts to negotiate their release. The families of the hostages continue to advocate for support and assistance in bringing their loved ones home, emphasizing the emotional toll and suffering experienced by those still in captivity. Israel’s government faces pressure to take decisive action to resolve the hostage situation and prevent further harm to the captives.
