The durian consultant Mr. Lim highlighted the popularity of the Black Thorn variety in the Chinese market, noting its sweeter taste compared to the slightly bitter Musang King. He emphasized the importance of staying adaptable to changes in consumer preferences to remain competitive in meeting China’s increasing demand for durians.

Data from the agricultural ministry showed that Black Thorn only makes up one percent of Malaysia’s total durian production market, while Musang King accounts for 36 percent. Kampung durians, primarily consumed locally, represent 38 percent of production, with D24 varieties at 11 percent and hybrid durian clones at 14 percent. Despite the higher cost of Black Thorn compared to Musang King, Mr. Chong predicted a shift in market dynamics driven by changing trends in China.

The premium grade Black Thorns are priced at RM80 per kg in Malaysia, while Musang Kings are priced at RM50 per kg. Mr. Chong highlighted the growing demand for rare durian varieties in China, with consumers seeking unique and exotic options. He stressed the importance of protecting durian farms from extreme weather, which is likely to become more severe due to the impact of climate change, to maintain quality and market value.

Ensuring immunity to weather-related challenges is crucial for achieving desired fruit quality and aroma, regardless of durian variety. Mr. Chong emphasized the impact of climate change on durian cultivation and the need for Malaysian farms to prepare for increasingly extreme weather conditions in the future. He underscored the importance of maintaining premium-grade quality to meet the expectations of discerning consumers in both domestic and international markets.

By staying informed about market trends, adapting to changing consumer preferences, and investing in weather-resistant farming practices, Malaysia can position itself as a leading supplier of high-quality durians to meet the growing demand in China and other key markets. Mr. Chong’s insights underscore the importance of agility, quality control, and sustainability in the durian industry to capitalize on emerging opportunities and maintain a competitive edge in the global marketplace.
