This weekend, approximately 20,000 scouts from all over Italy will gather in Verona for a large-scale meeting in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Agesci, the Association of Catholic Guides and Scouts of Italy. The scout movement, which originated in 1907 from an idea by English Lieutenant General Robert Baden-Powell, has grown to over forty million members worldwide. The educational scout method, based on volunteerism, is designed to meet the needs of young people in three age groups: cubs, aged 8 to 12; scouts, aged 13 to 16; and rovers, aged 16 to 19.
The organization engages in service activities focused on civic engagement, solidarity, the environment, and the discovery and appreciation of different cultures through progressive and stimulating programs. Exploration and adventure, while still closely tied to the natural environment, also provide opportunities for scouts to engage with social realities. They may participate in overseas camps and meaningful service experiences both in Italy and across Europe.
