Dental experts are warning against the use of fake, decorative braces, known as “fashion braces”, which are applied at home. These braces can cause damage to tooth enamel, misalignment, and oral infections. Once enamel is damaged, it cannot grow back, leading to potentially permanent issues with the teeth.

The trend of fashion braces is not new, with a 2018 medical journal entry warning about their popularity in Southeast Asia. Thailand even banned fake braces after two teenagers developed infections and died. Despite concerns about the materials used in these braces and the harm they can cause to teeth, gums, lips, and surrounding bones, the trend has spread to other parts of the world.

The rise of TikTok tutorials showing how to apply these fake braces has drawn criticism from orthodontists. These cosmetic brackets and wires could contain toxic chemicals like cadmium or lead, and the adhesive used in the kits is usually not medical-grade. This increases the risk of the braces coming loose and potentially causing harm, including becoming a choking hazard if they fall off completely.

In May, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) issued a warning about the serious consequences of wearing fashion braces. They highlighted the risk of heavy metals seeping into oral tissues and causing infection. Additionally, they raised concerns about the trend of “basement braces”, where individuals seek out unlicensed or unqualified providers for dental work to avoid the high cost of professional treatment.

Orthodontists stress the importance of consulting with a dental professional before attempting any type of aesthetic improvement of the teeth. While metal braces can be costly, with an average price of $3,000 to $7,000, there may be payment plans or more affordable options available. Seeking advice from a qualified dental professional can help individuals make informed decisions about their oral health and avoid the risks associated with DIY dental treatments.
