Gangs in Haiti continue to pose a significant threat to international aid workers and Haitians despite ongoing efforts to provide food assistance and humanitarian support. The United Nations reported serving 500,000 hot meals to over 76,000 displaced people and distributing 4 million liters of drinking water to more than 60,000 individuals. However, gangs in Haiti are hindering these efforts, as evidenced by a recent five-hour shootout between Haitian police and gang members who hijacked a cargo ship carrying 60,000 pounds of rice.

The violence perpetrated by gangs in Haiti has attracted international attention, especially after gangs formed an alliance and attempted to take control of the capital city. While they have not completely taken over the city, they continue to inflict harm on citizens, particularly targeting police forces, government agencies, and once peaceful suburban areas. The resulting humanitarian crisis has prompted international aid groups and private entities to join forces to provide much-needed aid to Haiti, where food insecurity is becoming increasingly prevalent.

In response to the escalating crisis, Goya Foods and The Jack Brewer Foundation have started airlifting thousands of pounds of non-perishable food items to remote areas of Haiti. The aid includes rice, beans, coconut water, and canned goods to assist children and families facing dire circumstances. Goya Foods’ president and CEO, Bob Unanue, emphasized the company’s commitment to giving back to communities and providing aid to vulnerable populations. The foundation, led by Jack Brewer, has been working in Haiti since 2010 and has witnessed the devastating impact of natural disasters, economic downturns, the COVID pandemic, and the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.

Brewer’s organization has also been involved in evacuating Americans stranded in Haiti due to the gang activities and airport closures. He expressed gratitude for Goya Foods’ partnership in supporting both Americans and Haitians during this challenging time. By funding evacuation missions and providing food assistance to orphans and vulnerable Haitians, Goya Foods and the foundation are helping combat malnutrition exacerbated by the turmoil caused by gangs in the country. Despite the challenges of planning food airlifts in Haiti, including ensuring the safety of delivery crews, three food delivery missions were scheduled to be completed within a short timeframe.

The situation in Haiti remains volatile as gangs continue to pose a threat to stability and security in the country. While efforts are being made to provide aid and support to those in need, the persistent violence and criminal activities of gangs present significant challenges. The coordinated efforts of international aid groups, private entities, and local organizations are crucial in addressing the humanitarian crisis and assisting vulnerable populations in Haiti. By providing essential food items and support, these organizations are working to alleviate the suffering and hardship faced by Haitians affected by the ongoing gang violence.
