Johannes Volkmann, the 27-year-old grandson of former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, has announced his candidacy for a position on the CDU federal board at the party’s national convention in Berlin in May. Volkmann, who describes himself as a “heartfelt European,” is following in his grandfather’s footsteps in pursuing a political career within the CDU. He has been nominated by the Hessian CDU and the Young Union, and holds degrees in economics, political science, and sociology, as well as speaks Chinese. He currently works as a consultant in the EU Parliament in Brussels and serves as the chairman of the district council in Lahn-Dill-Kreis.

Volkmann’s decision to run for a position on the CDU federal board comes six decades after his grandfather, Helmut Kohl, held the position of Chancellor from 1982 to 1998. Despite his family legacy, Volkmann emphasizes the importance of his own accomplishments and wishes to be known for his own merit rather than simply as the grandson of Kohl. In a statement to the German Press Agency, Volkmann expressed his admiration for his grandfather’s achievements in the realms of German and European unity, which align with his own goals as a politician. He highlighted the need for a united EU to address international challenges posed by countries such as Russia and China.

Volkmann gained nationwide attention in 2021 when he appeared on the television show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” and chose to walk away from the 64,000-euro question. Despite his family background, he seeks to establish himself as an independent figure in politics under his own name, rather than relying on his grandfather’s legacy. Volkmann’s mother’s maiden name is Christine Volkmann, which he also uses. His grandfather, Helmut Kohl, passed away in June 2017, leaving behind a legacy of political leadership and dedication to European unity that Volkmann hopes to continue in his own political career.

As a candidate for the CDU federal board, Volkmann aims to contribute his skills and expertise to the party’s leadership, drawing on his academic background and professional experience in the EU Parliament. With a focus on promoting European unity and addressing global challenges, he seeks to make a meaningful impact within the CDU and contribute to shaping the party’s policies and direction. Volkmann’s decision to pursue a leadership role within the CDU reflects his commitment to public service and his desire to carry on his grandfather’s legacy of political dedication and European integration.

The upcoming CDU national convention in Berlin will provide an opportunity for party members to vote on Volkmann’s candidacy for a position on the federal board. His unique background and family connection to former Chancellor Helmut Kohl may attract attention and interest from party members and supporters. If elected, Volkmann would bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to the CDU leadership, drawing on his diverse experiences and expertise to contribute to the party’s future direction. His candidacy represents a continuation of his family’s political legacy and a commitment to serving the interests of the CDU and the German people.
