Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg responded to a tragic incident at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Course, where a pedestrian was killed and golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested. Beshear expressed condolences for the victim and his family, calling the events that followed the tragic incident unfortunate. Greenberg identified the victim as John Mills and also sent his condolences to his family, mentioning an incident involving Louisville Metro Police and Scheffler. LMPD is investigating the incident, and they are focusing on the tragic loss of life.

The tragic morning at Valhalla Golf Course began when a pedestrian was struck by a shuttle bus and pronounced dead at the accident site. The victim was identified as a worker with one of the PGA of America’s vendors. The organization expressed its condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones. Scheffler, a professional golfer, was then arrested after driving past a police officer in his PGA Championship vehicle. The officer instructed him to stop and attached himself to the car until Scheffler finally stopped. The incident, characterized as a misunderstanding with traffic flow, ended with Scheffler being placed in handcuffs and booked into the Louisville Department of Corrections on multiple charges.

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic. A police report stated that a detective was knocked down after Scheffler refused to comply and accelerated forward. Despite the incident, Scheffler was able to make it back in time for his second-round tee times at the PGA Championship. Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, defended his client, stating that he was following instructions in a marked vehicle with credentials and did not intentionally do anything wrong. The legal process regarding Scheffler’s arrest will continue to unfold as the investigation progresses.

Beshear and Greenberg expressed their condolences for the victim of the tragic accident and his family, emphasizing the importance of coming to a resolution and focusing on the loss of life. The Louisville Metro Police Department is investigating both the fatal accident and the incident involving Scheffler. The PGA of America also extended its sincere condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones, acknowledging the heartbreaking nature of the incident. As more information becomes available, updates will be shared regarding both matters. Despite the unfortunate events that occurred at the PGA Championship, the tournament continued, and Scheffler was able to compete in the second round amidst the legal proceedings.
