Freddie Prinze Jr. is in talks to potentially return for I Know What You Did Last Summer, but nothing is confirmed until a contract is signed. Prinze Jr. expressed his motivation to make it work and mentioned that both sides are trying to coordinate schedules and ensure everyone is happy with the script. He praised director Jen Robinson and expressed interest in working with her on the reboot.

The original 1997 horror film followed four friends haunted by a hook-wielding maniac after a tragic accident. Prinze Jr. played Ray opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. A sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, saw Prinze Jr. and Hewitt’s characters happily married, but the story was left on a cliffhanger. A third installment, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, featured a new cast and was released straight to video.

Sony announced a new reboot of the franchise directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, with Prinze Jr. and Hewitt in talks to reprise their roles. The film stars Madelyn Cline, Camila Mendes, Tony Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King. It is set for a July 18, 2025 release date. Hewitt stated that she would be happy to return if the story felt right, as she enjoyed working on the original films.

As they wait for confirmation on their potential involvement, both Hewitt and Prinze Jr. are focusing on other projects. Hewitt is filming season 8 of her ABC show 9-1-1, while Prinze Jr.’s new film The Girl in the Pool was recently released. In the new film, Prinze Jr. plays a morally questionable character, which he found exciting as it allowed him to explore a different type of role. The Girl in the Pool is currently available on demand.

Prinze Jr. emphasized the uncertainty surrounding his return to I Know What You Did Last Summer, highlighting the importance of schedules, script approval, and overall satisfaction with the project. While the potential involvement of Prinze Jr. and Hewitt has generated buzz among fans, it remains to be seen how their characters will fit into the reboot. With the film scheduled for a 2025 release, audiences eagerly anticipate a fresh take on the beloved horror franchise.
