Kevin Long, a former South Carolina standout and NFL player for the New York Jets, passed away at the age of 69. His former track coach, Curtis Frye, notified the university of his death, although no cause was specified. Long, a native of Clinton, South Carolina, made a name for himself as a star running back for the Gamecocks in 1975, becoming the first South Carolina running back to rush for over 1,000 yards and achieving six games with over 100 rushing yards.

In 1977, Long was drafted by the New York Jets in the seventh round, alongside Hall of Famer Joe Klecko and Wesley Walker. He started in four out of 14 games during his rookie season, but truly shined in his second year when he ran for 954 yards and 10 touchdowns. Over the course of his NFL career, Long accumulated 2,190 rushing yards and 25 rushing touchdowns, playing solely for the Jets from 1977 to 1981. After his time in the NFL, he went on to join the United States Football League in 1983, playing for the Chicago Blitz, Arizona Wranglers, and the Arizona Outlaws.

Long is survived by his wife, Frankie, their four children, and six grandchildren, as reported by FOX 57. The news of Long’s passing was confirmed by the university, with his former track coach expressing his condolences. Long’s legacy as a standout player both at South Carolina and in the NFL will be remembered by many, as he made significant contributions to the sport during his playing career.
