Former bishop of Solsona, Xavier Novell, has married his partner Silvia Caballol, after receiving permission from Pope Francis. The ceremony took place in the Church, allowing them to regularize their canonical situation and receive communion. Novell still holds the title of bishop, but is no longer able to preside over masses as he has been granted secularization by the Pope. Novell resigned from his position as bishop of Solsona in 2021 due to his relationship with Caballol, a psychologist and writer, and the couple married in a civil ceremony at the end of the same year, welcoming twin daughters in April 2022.

Caballol has emphasized the importance of publicly announcing their marriage as a way to promote transparency and prevent speculation. She disagrees with the decision to keep Novell’s resignation from the bishopric private in the past, and believes that their wedding should be openly acknowledged. Novell, who was once the youngest bishop in Spain when he was appointed to the diocese of Solsona in 2010, was known for his conservative views on issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage, and euthanasia. He also expressed support for a referendum on the independence of Catalonia and the right to self-determination, as well as advocated for the freedom of the imprisoned Catalan independence leaders.

Despite his previous conservative stance, Novell’s marriage to Caballol, a divorced woman, and their public celebration of their union, reflect a departure from traditional Catholic teachings on marriage and family life. The couple’s decision to marry and have children together has sparked discussion and debate within the Catholic community, with some supporting their actions and others questioning the compatibility of their relationship with Novell’s former role as a bishop. However, Caballol and Novell have chosen to prioritize their personal happiness and commitment to each other, rather than conforming to societal expectations or religious norms.

The couple’s decision to marry has met with approval from Pope Francis, who granted Novell permission to marry and receive secularization. This has allowed Novell to remain connected to the Church while also living a life that aligns with his personal beliefs and values. By openly sharing their story and celebrating their love through marriage, Caballol and Novell hope to inspire others to prioritize love and happiness in their own lives, regardless of the obstacles or challenges they may face. Their union serves as a testament to the power of love and commitment in overcoming barriers and finding fulfillment and joy in relationships.
