The GeekWire Awards recognize the top innovators and companies in technology in the Pacific Northwest. The 2024 finalists for Sustainable Innovation of the Year are working on solutions to address environmental and climate issues. Last year’s winner, Pure Watercraft, manufactures electric powerboats. The finalists this year are focused on a variety of initiatives, including eliminating PFAS chemicals from water, extracting carbon dioxide from seawater, using AI and computer vision technology to destroy weeds, and turning discarded crab shells into industrial chemicals.

One of the finalists, Aquagga from Tacoma, has developed technology that removes PFAS chemicals from contaminated water, which have been added to various products for decades and present a significant environmental risk. Another finalist, Banyu Carbon, founded by University of Washington oceanography professors, is working on removing carbon dioxide from seawater as a method of combating climate change. The startup Carbon Robotics is selling weed-zapping machines that use AI and lasers to kill weeds without harming crops, while Electric Era from Seattle makes fast-charging stations for electric vehicles that pair with onsite batteries to reduce energy costs during peak usage times. Additionally, Tidal Vision is utilizing discarded crab shells to create industrial chemicals, offering a sustainable alternative to toxic products currently used in industry.

These companies have all received significant funding and investment, with Aquagga securing $9 million in grants, Banyu Carbon raising $8.5 million from investors, Carbon Robotics receiving $80 million in funding, Electric Era obtaining $20.5 million in investments, and Tidal Vision raising nearly $50 million. Their innovative technologies and sustainable practices have the potential to make a significant impact on environmental and climate challenges. The GeekWire Awards aim to highlight and recognize the achievements of these companies and individuals in the Pacific Northwest technology sector.

The GeekWire Awards finalists were selected based on community nominations and input from judges. Community voting will continue until April 12, with winners announced live on stage at Showbox SoDo in Seattle on May 9. Table sponsorships are available for those interested in attending the event, and opportunities for sponsoring a category are also open. Astound Business Solutions is the presenting sponsor of the 2024 GeekWire Awards, supporting the recognition and celebration of innovative and sustainable initiatives in the Pacific Northwest technology industry.

The initiatives and technologies showcased by the finalists for Sustainable Innovation of the Year at the GeekWire Awards exemplify the growing trend of entrepreneurs in the Pacific Northwest focusing their talents on addressing pressing environmental and climate challenges. From removing pollutants and combatting carbon emissions to finding sustainable alternatives for industrial chemicals, these companies are paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future. By recognizing and celebrating their efforts, the GeekWire Awards are helping to highlight the crucial role that technology and innovation play in creating positive environmental impact.
